Curriculum

Much of our curriculum content is based on the 16 Guidelines.~ 16Guidelines.org

Each month we explore one of the 16 Guidelines, celebrate Buddhist holy days (such as Saka Dawa and Lama Tsongkhapa Day), introduce Buddhist practices (including prostrations and reciting mantras), and participate in Center-wide celebrations (like Losar and Compassion Day).

In large part, our curriculum is developed from the 16 Guidelines, character traits that can bring happiness and meaning to everyday life. Our lineage teacher Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche explains the necessity of teaching children these guidelines:

“In short, your children have to create karma from their own side in order to
experience happiness and success. Just as a beggar on the street is not nourished by someone
eating delicious food in an expensive restaurant, likewise your child will not experience happiness
as a result of the good karma created by its parents.”

The 16 Guidelines were developed within Universal Wisdom Education (UWE) whose aim is to empower children, youth and adults to make a positive difference in the world through developing their innate capacity to be kind and wise, and to live in a way that will bring peace and wellbeing to themselves and the people around them. The 16 Guidelines are collected under four themes:

  • How we think
  • How we act
  • How we relate to others
  • How we find meaning
