Khensur Rinpoche confers Refuge and the Lay Precepts

~ Refuge Ceremony ~

The opportunity to take Refuge is a rare one, and even more rare is the opportunity to do so with a teacher such as Khensur Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Delek. On this precious day, Khensur Rinpoche confers vows of Refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha and offers the opportunity to take the Five Lay Precepts.

Saturday, November 5, 10 am in the gompa and online via Zoom or live stream on YouTube. Register here for Zoom.

Pre-registration is required if taking refuge for the first time. Sorry, registration is now closed.

Taking refuge is making a commitment to Buddhism as one's spiritual path and creates a strong karmic bond to the refuge master.  During the ceremony, registered students who are taking refuge for the first time will be given their Tibetan refuge name by Khensur Rinpoche.

There are many opportunities to participate in these auspicous events and to serve Khensur Rinpoche, our Geshes, and countless other beings.

Students who are taking Refuge for the first time:

  • If taking refuge for the first time, whether in person or online, students are required to pre-register HERE by 6 PM, Tuesday Nov. 1st.
  • If taking refuge in person, students must make plans to be at Kadampa Center no later than 10 AM to attend a madatory pre-ceremony orientation and rehearsal ~ this is very important!
  • If taking refuge in person, students should bring two katas with them and a monetary offering (any amount) in an envelope for Khensur Rinpoche.
  • Students who are not vaccinated, or who are unable to attend the Refuge Ceremony in person, may take refuge online via Zoom or live stream on YouTube.  These students, however, must pre-register HERE by 6 PM, Tuesday Nov. 1st.

Students who have previously taken Refuge

  • Please do NOT register for the Refuge Ceremony if you have previously taken refuge.
  • May attend the Refuge Ceremony either in person, online via Zoom or live stream on YouTube.
  • May renew their lay vows if they wish.
  • Are NOT required to register or attend the pre-ceremony orientation and rehearsal.

Preparing ahead of time to take Refuge, both mentally and logistically:

  • To prepare mentally (ahead of time) to take Refuge and the Five Lay Vows (Precepts):
    • Geshe Gelek recommends that anyone interested in taking refuge should read the refuge section in Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand (available for purchase in our Dharma Shop or as an eBook from FPMT's Foundation Store).
    • Students are also encourage to listen to a teaching on refuge given by Geshe-la ~ listen to the recording HERE.
    • Learn more about vows from this article in FPMT's Mandala Magazine.
  • To prepare logistically (ahead of time) for the Refuge Ceremony:
    • Bring two katas, as it is traditional to offer one to the Buddha statue on the altar and one to offer to Khensur Rinpoche.  Katas are available for purchase ahead of time in our Dharma Shop.
    • Additionally, it is also auspicious to bring a monetary offering (any amount) for Khensure Rinpoche in an envelope to show your appreciation for the incredible gift he has just given you with this opportunity to take refuge.  If you wish, you may also include a card expressing your thanks.

Sera Jey Khensur Rinpoche Jetsun Lobsang Delek, the former abbot of Sera Jey Monastic University in southern India and of Gyüme Tantric College, one of the foremost teachers of the "Five Major Texts" at Sera Jey, one of the last living masters educated at Sera Jey Monastery in Tibet - and, the last living teacher of our own beloved Resident Geshes, Geshe Gelek Chodha and Geshe Palden Sangpo - will confer the Refuge Ceremony and the Lay Precepts.
