Saka Dawa Düchen, the fifteenth day of the fourth month in the Tibetan lunar calendar, is the day when we commemorate Shakyamuni Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana (passing from this life). This year, Saka Dawa Düchen falls on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.
As one of the four Great Holy Days (or Buddha Days) of Tibetan Buddhism, Saka Dawa Düchen is a merit-multiplying day. Because three major life events of Shakyamuni Buddha (birth, enlightenment, and parinirvana) are recognized on Saka Dawa, it is an especially auspicious day for spiritual practice as the karmic effects of all actions are multiplied three hundred million times (as explained by Lama Zopa Rinpoche in his Advice for Saka Dawa Düchen). Geshe Gelek advises us to create merit by walking around the stupa (or the entire gompa building), reciting mantras and sutras, liberating animals, saying prayers and doing charitable works. More practice advice for Saka Dawa Düchen can also be found on the FPMT website HERE. |
On this most auspicious holy day, Geshe Gelek has offered to hold a Refuge Ceremony in which he will confer refuge and lay vows!
Please see the Refuge Ceremony event page for details about this incredibly rare and wonderful opportunity.
