About Chokhor Düchen

Seven weeks after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya in India, Shakyamuni Buddha gave his first teaching on the Four Noble Truths, at Deer Park in Sarnath, India.  We celebrate this holy day as Chokhor Düchen, a day in which the karma from our positive actions are multiplied 100 million times!

This first teaching, referred to as the First Turning of the Wheel of Dharma, led to the formation of the Sangha, the community of disciples committed to following the Buddha's example of living simply, following the Path, and teaching the Dharma.  Accordingly, every year on Chokhor Düchen, the FPMT encourages its Centers to celebrate the presence of their Sangha community.  Please consider making offerings to each of our Sangha members on this incredibly auspicious Buddha Holy Day.

Kadampa Center's website includes a "Sangha Support and Offerings" page with valuable information, including a previous year's talk and Q&A about sangha with our director, Robbie Watkins.

Additionally, specific practices recommended by Lama Zopa Rinpoche for merit-multiplying days can be on on the FPMT website's "Practice on the Four Great Holy Days" page.

Buddhist Mind Science - Information Session "Open Day"

Join us for an information session to learn more about the newest FPMT Introductory Course!  During this online informational session Marina Brucet Vinyals and Hans Burghardt, the teachers and creators of the course, will explain the content and structure of the course series, what you can expect to take away from it, how and when the course will be offered, and answer any quesions you may have.

Mark your calendar for Saturday, June 22, 12 noon, and click HERE to register.

***All students and potential course facilitators are encouraged to attend to learn more!

Buddhist Mind Science: Activating Your Potential is the latest FPMT introductory course.  Buddhism is considered by some to be a “science of mind” because it presents a comprehensive map describing the mind and its various aspects and functions. The Buddha’s teachings also provide methods to observe the mind directly and to discover and activate our inner potential. And it does so with one intention: to overcome suffering and its causes, and to cultivate true and lasting happiness.

This course introduces the Buddhist knowledge of the mind to provide:

  • Practical techniques and insight on meditation,

  • Understanding of the mechanisms of suffering and happiness,

  • Tools to find purpose and mental balance in our daily life, and

  • The means to discover and activate our inner potential for warmheartedness and wisdom.

And it does so through presenting both the Buddhist and a comparative modern scientific perspectives to stimulate reflection and inquiry.

Please click HERE for more in-depth information and details about the course.

***Registered FPMT teachers and senior students who may be interested in offering and facilitating this course at Kadampa Center are invited and encouraged to participate in this informational session to learn more.  Please contact Linda Saah at program.linda@kadampa-center.org to discuss.

Creating a Dharma Will with Venerable Khando

Saturday April 13th, 9:30am - 12:30pm

Most of us who have studied Buddhist teachings for any length of time have heard a great deal about death. It can be summed up in the simple statement:

I'm going to die, that's for sure.

As we go through our days doing our best to have a peaceful and content mind, we are both living well and preparing for death. When death arrives, the most important thing is to have a peaceful mind, and how we live very much influences how we die.

How do we prepare for the inevitable? The prayers and practices that sustain us in our everyday lives can also sustain us at the time of death, but if illness or mental incapacity comes before death, we might no longer be able to study, pray and meditate, and do the practices that have cultivated a peaceful mindstream. Having those practices available to us can help ease the transition from this life to the next.

Preparing for death includes preparing those around us who wish to support us - our spiritual community - to help us through the transition. A Dharma Will is a way of making clear to ourselves and others what will help us have a peaceful mind when we are sick, dying or have died.

In a followup to Venerable Amy Miller's workshop on preparing for death spiritually, Venerable Khando will walk us through what we need to know about creating a Dharma Will, which lays out our wishes for support before, during and after our deaths. Kadampa Center has an online Dharma Will form that we will be using.

We encourage you to bring your own devices - phone, tablet or laptop - so you can follow along during the workshop.

In this morning workshop, we will learn about the dying process and the elements of a Dharma Will, and then prepare our own documents that lay out our wishes and needs.

We will have an outline that we can use as a guide to fill in our personal information. By doing this in a group, we can receive and offer support to all of us within the group.  See below for links to a variety of resources, as well as to Kadampa Center's online Dharma Will form.
