SPIRITUAL: Special Class

10:00 am Saturday, March 10, 2018

Most of us who have studied Buddhist teachings for any length of time have heard a great deal about death. It can be summed up in the simple statement:

I’m going to die, that’s for sure.

As we go through our days doing our best to have a peaceful and content mind, we are both living well and preparing for death. When death arrives, the most important thing is to have a peaceful mind, and how we live very much influences how we die.

How do we prepare for the inevitable? The prayers and practices that sustain us in our everyday lives can also sustain us at the time of death, but if illness or mental incapacity comes before death, we might no longer be able to study, pray and meditate, and do the practices that have cultivated a peaceful mindstream. Having those practices available to us can help ease the transition from this life to the next.

A Dharma will is a way of making clear to ourselves and others what will be help us have a  peaceful mind when we are sick, dying or have died.

In this one-day workshop, we will learn about the dying process and the elements of a Dharma will, and then prepare our own documents that lay out our wishes and needs.

The morning session will be a brief overview of the death process and the elements in a dharma will.

The afternoon session will be an opportunity to begin deciding and documenting what will support us during this time: What we want to hear, see, touch and taste, the practices, mantras and images we want around us when we are sick, dying and during our time in the bardo.

We will have an outline that we can use as a guide to fill in our personal information. By doing this in a group, we can receive an offer support to all of us within the group.

Anyone is welcome to attend the morning session only and continue their day. We request those who come for the afternoon work session please attend the morning session as well.

We will break for lunch when folks can go out or bring their own and chat.

This workshop led by Venerable Ngawang Khando.

Please register for this event!  We will have printed copies of some the materials, and your registration helps us print enough, but not too many!

Spend a day focusing on core meditation practices that are ideal for incorporating into your daily practice.

The day will be from 9 am - 4 pm and divided into six 35-minute sessions with 20 minute breaks and lunch.

Sessions will consist of motivation, meditation on the topic, dedication, and a few minutes of journaling to record how the session was for you, anything you learned, and any challenges that arose. Please bring a journal and food for your day such as snacks and lunch.

To maintain a stable and peaceful retreat environment, participants should commit to attending the entire day. To enable participants to keep focus and concentration, the retreat will be silent except during guided meditations and for essential communication.          Every Drop Counts!

Be a wish-fulfilling jewel and offer a pint of blood, a gift of life to others!

To celebrate His Holiness’ birthday, Kadampa Center will hold a blood drive on Thursday, July 6, from 2 to 6:30 p.m.

We hope to present our gift to His Holiness when he comes to Raleigh in October, so the more bountiful the number of donations, the better!

Can't donate blood? You can contribute by volunteering!  We need folks to help make room in the gompa for the donor beds, to check people in and offer snacks, and to set the gompa back up after the drive. Click here to sign up as a volunteer.

Your offering of blood can be the difference between life and death for another, benefitting not only the recipients but everyone in their lives.  Many of us have personal experience with blood transfusions, either for ourselves or for someone we love – our brother,  our mother, our BFF.

We’re working with the pros in blood drives, the American Red Cross, and we have a big goal – 50 pints!

Please invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to join in our blood drive and keep hearts beating throughout our community.

Here’s what you need to know to help create our gift of compassion to others, to offer to His Holiness:

Who: All aspiring bodhisattvas!
What: 50 pints of blood, one pint at a time
When: 2 – 6:30 pm, Thursday, July 6, (His Holiness’ actual birthday)
Where: Kadampa Center gompa
How: Go to redcrossblood.org  and enter sponsor code: Kadampa
  Then follow the instructions
Why: To eliminate suffering!

The link to register is redcrossblood.org   Our sponsor code is Kadampa

If you can’t donate blood for any reason but want to help create this gift to His Holiness,  click here to volunteer.

Read here about how one precious life was saved by other's kindness. You can make the same difference for someone!

And don’t forget to dedicate your merit, for the benefit of all sentient beings, and for the long, happy, healthy life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama!

Kadampa Center is happy to welcome VIsiting Teacher Don Handrick for a weekend workshop on Eight Steps to a Happy Life!

The Noble Eightfold Path is one of the principal teachings of the Buddha and still has great relevance today, providing us with effective guidelines for how to live our lives and develop spiritually. In this weekend course we will explore these eight factors that can alleviate our suffering and train in their skillful and practical application in order to find true happiness in daily life and beyond.

Don Handrick will help us explore these guidelines and how they can help us live truly happy, meaningful lives.

The schedule:

Friday, June 2  7-8:30 pm

Saturday, June 3  10 am - noon and 1:30 - 4 pm

Sunday, June 4   1:30 - 4 pm

Don will also teach our regular  Sunday morning Dharma for a Happy life, from 10:30-noon.

We encourage folks to bring a bag lunch on Saturday and Sunday, so we can keep our momentum by discussing the morning's teachings over lunch -- and get better acquainted in the process!

As always, these Dharma teachings will be offered with no entrance fee. However, there are extensive costs involved in bringing a visiting teacher from another city, including travel and food.  A great way to support the teachings is through sponsorship!

Want to do more than just come and hear teachings?  We need volunteers to help greet folks at the door, and set up and take down water bowl offerings.  Sign up here for the volunteer job of your choice!

Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave extensive teachings at the Light of the Path retreat, touching on numerous topics relevant to our daily lives. Geshe Gelek has requested that we spend our Wednesday lam-rim sessions reviewing and discussing some of Rinpoche's teachings.

Everyone is welcome -- no need to have attended the retreat to come to these discussions!

In these discussion sessions, facilitated by one of our nuns, we will review selected teachings and deepen our understanding of them through discussion among the entire group. Our teachers often tell us that discussion accounts for at least half of our success in learning.
