Wednesday, May 26, (All day) 2021

Saka Dawa is the month when we honor Shakyamuni Buddha's birth, enlightenment and parinirvana (passing from this life).

This day, Saka Dawa Düchen, is the full-moon day of the month.

This day, and the entire month, are especially auspicious for spiritual practice  — the karmic effects of all actions are multiplied one hundred thousand times.

Because of the COVID pandemic, Kadampa Center will not hold any Saka Dawa events at the Center. We will hold a Medicine Buddha Puja online at 12 noon.

Geshe Gelek advises us to create merit by going around the stupa (or the entire Center building), reciting mantras and sutras, liberating animals, saying prayers and doing charitable works. Those who have taken precepts from a qualified master are encouraged to do so at home before your altar.

Saka Dawa is the month when we honor Shakyamuni Buddha's birth, enlightenment and parinirvana (passing from this life).

This month, May 12 through June 10, is especially auspicious for spiritual practice  — the karmic effects of all actions are multiplied one hundred thousand times.

Geshe Gelek and Geshe Sangpo advise that we can create merit by going around the stupa (or the entire Center building), reciting mantras and sutras, liberating animals, saying prayers and doing charitable works. Those who have taken precepts from a qualified master are encouraged to do so at home before your altar.

One powerful practice is to take the Eight Mahayana Precepts, simple vows of morality that we take for 24 hours. These must be taken from a qualified master the first time, and Lama Zopa Rinpoche has kindly made it possible to begin doing this practice by taking the precepts online from Rinpoche himself! (Please note: this web page was created in 2020 and cites the date of the 15th day for 2020. In 2021, that date is May 26.)

May 26 is Saka Dawa Düchen, the full moon day. Kadampa Center will hold a Medicine Buddha Puja online at 12pm on this day.

Because of the Covid pandemic, Kadampa Center will not hold any events at the center for Saka Dawa. Please remember all those suffering from the virus in your prayers.

Discussion and debate are among the best tools for understanding and integrating the Dharma so that it is truly part of our minds.

On these Thursday nights, we will meet in the gompa to watch teachings online from qualified teachers, and then discuss what we've heard.

Upcoming session (June 10 - July 8):  Shantideva's Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life  Teachings by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, New Delhi, India, March 19-21, 2010

We will divide this three-day teaching by His Holiness into five video and discussion sessions.

Please register here.

Because of the pandemic, this program limited to no more than 20 people; registration is required and limited to 20 participants.

Please keep in mind that this is an in-person event - unlike online events, each registration reserves one of a limited number of seats and precludes another person attending.

Students are required to wear masks while inside the Center.

This event will take place at the Center; there will be no online option.   This group is led by long-time member Jack Shannon.

Current session (May 6 - June 3):  Dealing with Destructive Emotions - Teachings  by Geshe Lhakdor  Registration for this session is full.

Our mind plays a very crucial role in all our experiences, whether painful or pleasant. In these teachings with Geshe Lhakdor-la we will learn about how we can work with and relate to our emotions, thus helping us to decrease the harmful and disturbing emotions which prevent our mind from experiencing peace and happiness.

This teaching is based on Shantideva’s Boddhisattvacharyavatara (4th chapter)

Geshe Lhakdor is a Tibetan Buddhist scholar who has co-authored and co-translated several books on Tibetan Buddhism. He was also an English translator for His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He is a Director of the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamshala, India.

Just as a bird relies on two wings for flight, the two aspects of compassion and wisdom are both essential to fulfill our aspirations to attain the state of complete awakening.

Informed by wisdom, compassion understands how to be present and helpful in the face of confusion and suffering.

Inspired by compassion, wisdom is moved to uproot the source of all confusion and enable us to quickly and skillfully benefit others.

Working together they become inseparable, a singular and potent energy dedicated to removing the suffering of the world.

In this course, we will examine teachings on the development of compassion from the renowned seventh-century Indian Buddhist scholar, Chandrakirti, in which he provides clear instruction on how to bring these two minds together in meditation and daily practice.

Gen (teacher) Don brings a masterly understanding of the Buddha's teachings, coupled with a kind and gentle approach to life, to his teaching style. We are happy to welcome him back to Kadampa Center!

This course will be offered online on YouTube and Zoom. Registration is required to participate via Zoom.

Supporting the teachings

Supporting the teachings is an incredibly powerful and important act -- it is a practice of the highest form of generosity – giving the means to enlightenment. Kadampa Center has for many years operated within the ideal of offering teachings without charging a fee, so that money is not an obstacle for anyone to hear the precious teachings and participate in the practices. We rely on the generous hearts of those who are moved to support the spiritual offerings and keep them open to everyone regardless of ability to pay.

Although we don't have the expense of travel and hospitality for a teacher's virtual visit, donations are still needed and meaningful, and make it possible for us to make a generous offering to the teacher on behalf of everyone attending the teachings.

Supporting the teachings benefits not just the Center and those who attend, but it also greatly benefits the donor, because it creates the causes to meet the teachings again in future lives, and deepens the connection with the teacher.

Kadampa Center offers two ways to support the teachings: Sponsorships and Donations.

Sponsorships begin at $108.

Sponsors receive:

 - The opportunity to write a personal dedication that we will post  for all to share.  We must receive the sponsorship and dedication by the previous day to assure we have time to print and post your dedication.

There may be more than one sponsor for any event.

Donations are any amount less than $108.

Donors of $75 or more receive:

 - The opportunity to write a personal dedication that we will post for all to share. We must receive the sponsorship and dedication by the previous day to assure we have time to print and post your dedication.

Supporting the teachings is a two-step process

Step One  is dedicating your generosity (click here).

Step Two  is making the donation or sponsorship (use the buttons below on this page),

Dedications may be very simple - "For my mother, Rosemary" - or they might encompass more extensive spiritual wishes, such as "May these teachings be the cause to liberate all sentient beings," or wishes for the teacher's long life, to benefit a person who is ill - any heart-felt positive intention!  You also can dedicate for more than one intention. If you'd like, you can team up with friends on a sponsorship - please have one person make the donation and work it out among yourselves.

Use our secure online community to donate by clicking your choice below.

To try our new Text Giving, send KC108 to 73256 and select your level from the drop down menu..

Don't forget to dedicate your generosity!

CIRCUMAMBULATION PRACTICE

We all need purification and merit. Circumambulating sacred objects is a simple, yet powerful, way to do this!

Join us on the 4th Saturday of the month beginning in the gompa at 10:00 am.

Offered onsite, in person only.

Kadampa Center is blessed to have not only a stupa, but a gompa filled with statues, thangkas and holy texts – all powerful objects for circumambulation!

On each fourth Saturaday of the month, we will begin in the gompa with Geshe Sangpo leading us in prayers.  After which, we'll head outside where Geshe Sangpo will lead us in circumambulations of these sacred items.  Lastly, we will gather again inside the gompa for dedication prayers.

Volunteer!  If you can, please come 30 minutes early to help set up and/or plan to stay a few minutes after to help clean up.  Thank you!
