Thursday, November 12, (All day) to Sunday, November 15, (All day) 2015

The creation of a sand mandala is a rare and beautiful practice that requires extensive training in rituals. Starting Thursday and continuing into the weekend, Geshe Sangpo and Gen Norbu will be creating a Green Tara mandala, and students and visitors are invited to come watch as the monks build this ritual artwork by hand. The "sand" is actually mostly colored marble ground to a powder, sometimes with other precious substances.

At 10:00am on Thursday the 12th, there will be a very short opening ceremony (about 5 minutes).

On Sunday the 15th, after the mandala is completed, the monks will perform a Tara puja at XXX pm. At   XXX pm, there will be a closing ceremony where, with a remembrance of impermanence, the sand mandala will be deconstructed and taken to a body of water to be dispersed. Some of the blessed "sand" will be available to attendees with instructions how it can be used in Buddhist practice.

Every action we take – eating, drinking, walking, talking – can be done with mindfulness. In this one-day retreat with Geshe Gelek we will practice serious mindfulness with joyful effort!

The retreat will be held at Noland's farm, a member's lovely home and facility in Alamance County. The day will be spent in mindfulness meditation, with a beautiful and peaceful environment to nurture our ability to be mindful in the moment.

We will bring our own lunches and picnic on the lawns, weather permitting.

The basic schedule for the day will be:
9 to 9:30 a.m. – Arrival, check in, settle into the gompa
   9:30 a.m. –  Retreat orientation and logistics
   10 a.m. – First session
Noon  –  Lunch (only meal for the retreat)
   1:30p.m.  - Second session
   3 p.m.  – Third session
5-5:30 p.m.  – Retreat ends, followed by karma yoga cleanup

The retreat is being offered on a donation basis. You can help cover the costs of the retreat by making a donation to Kadampa Center online, by check, credit card in the bookstore, or cash in the boxes in our lobby - please indicate the funds are for the retreat. There will also be opportunities to make cash or check donations to both the center and directly to Noland's farm at the retreat. Specific directions to the farm and other important information will be sent to attendees after they register, closer to the time of the retreat. Students who wish to are invited to join together in prayers for His Eminence Choden Rinpoche, who passed away Sept. 11.

Choden Rinpoche was taught by the great Pabongka Rinpoche (Liberation in the Palm of Your Hand) and spent 19 years meditating in a tiny room in Tibet. He was one of the last teachers to have been educated in Tibet before the 1959 Chinese invasion.

We at Kadampa Center had the amazing good karma to host Choden Rinpoche as a visiting teacher in April, 2007.

During that visit, he blessed us with teachings on the Seven Point Mind Training and offered refuge. He also conferred a Medicine Buddha initiation as well as empowerments in White Tara, 1,000-Arm Chenrezig and the 21 Taras.  He also offered Bodhisattva Vows and conferred a Children's Blessing.

We had purchased our current building and were hard at work on renovations when he visited. Although the building wasn't ready to host teachings, he came and did a short blessing ceremony for our building -- so we all have a connection to him, even if we weren't able to go to his teachings or weren't even coming to Kadampa Center at the time.

The work of our Children and Youth Program allows both our families and the volunteers who teach our children a chance to experience the Dharma in fresh, new ways.

Today members of our CYP will give us an opportunity to share in that experience, with demonstrations of a lesson in the 16 Guidelines for a Happy Life, which are excellent tools for adults as well as children, and a lesson about Tara, the female Buddha of compassion in action. These lessons are taken from our Children's Program and this past spring's Family Camp.

Students who have had prior teachings on Buddhist meditation (Discovering Buddhism, Meditiation 101, etc.) are invited to participate in this practice.

Led by the Discovering Buddhism teacher, Shankha Mitra, this session is aimed at students in the course, but is also open to students who meet the above criteria. An important part of the Discovering Buddhism course is trying the practices, and this class allows students the opportunity to have guidance and the support of group practice to learn.

The Discovering Buddhism (DB) two-year course emphasizes an authentic yet culturally relevant presentation of the Buddha's teachings. Taught by FPMT registered teachers and facilitators, the classes lay a strong foundation of the entire Tibetan Buddhist path including how to integrate study and practice. This is an excellent “next step” for students who have taken the Buddhism in a Nutshell class and want to learn more. Students are also welcome to stay after class for a peer-led discussion group. There are no pre-requisites or fees, although donations are appreciated.

We ask that new students starting the course start at the first week of the module, on October 12, when we will have volunteers ready to explain how the course works and how to access online teachings by becoming a member (our membership coordinator will be there to sign up new members) . This makes the transition easiest for new students, and we've found that attending the entire module is the least confusing for everyone (rather than starting in the middle, not having clear instructions, and finding the topic difficult after missing the early classes).

In Establishing a Daily Practice, you will assemble the tools you need to develop a successful daily practice and find out the elements necessary to generate realizations. Get some tips for making every action meaningful.  This module is led by Shankha Mitra.

Meditation is a foundational tool of the Buddhist practitioner. We use different types of meditation in our practice to clear and calm the mind, review and deepen our understanding of teachings, develop concentration, and so on.

Our First Saturday Meditation practice will include three common modes of meditation:  breathing, concentration and analytical, with discussions in between.

Each Saturday will begin with a brief overview of meditation, based on notes taken from Geshe Gelek.

Geshe Gelek says that practicing in a group enhances and increases the power of our meditation, with all of us benefitting from the shared energy and experience of others in the room.

These sessions are led by senior students.
